A staple of Dragonia is the concept of energy and magic, common to all civilizations in the universe. Life energy is the power that fuels the body’s natural functions, some even take it so far as to say it’s the reason one’s body is always warm. As a companion to this energy, there is also Spirit Energy, the very essence of the life within. Though similar in the sense that they reside within the body, it is there the differences begin. For starters, life energy cannot be manifested outside the body, while spirit energy can. Life energy is a biological creation, each person has their own unique kind, and to use it means to lose it, and will greatly harm anyone who tries to do so by reducing their strength, stamina, and even their life span. Spirit energy, on the other hand, is purely ethereal in existence, and can be easily manifested outside the body in any number of ways; also, a person will have massive amounts more spirit energy than life energy, and warriors who know how to tap into those reserves usually have even more than usual. To counteract the constant use of one’s spirit energy, it will replenish over time with rest and food, though life energy does not.
This brings one to the various uses of the two energies. Spirit energy, being much more fluid and voluminous than life energy, is the obvious choice for attacking and defending. Pure spirit energy becomes energy attacks that can cut, smash, or detonate objects from close, or long range (think Ki from DBZ). However, if one manipulates their spirit energy via their life energy, then something completely new happens: life energy is unique from person to person, an affinity for specific elements a constant to that person, so when spirit energy is filtered through life energy, it becomes a third form of energy: Elemental energy. Elemental energy is what many civilizations have believed to be magic spells and such.
Of course, the previously mentioned energies are purely mortal forms of energy. Supernatural energies are mostly comprised of Celestial energy and Demonic energy. Celestial is heavenly in origin, and is aligned with the forces of good and angels. Demonic energy is unholy in origin, and is aligned with the forces of evil and demons. Strictly speaking, the only known people able to use these kinds of energy are full-fledged angels and demons, and take the place of both life and spirit energy, though it is capable of being used like normal spirit energy for cutting, smashing, or blasting attacks. A few down-sides to either form of energy is that to replenish one’s energy reserves, one must return to their respective afterlife, Heaven or Hell, and rest, and they are also incapable of performing elemental attacks. What is especially peculiar about these energies is how they affect different people: Immortal energies will affect people who use regular spirit energy no differently as if it were, but will simply “feel” differently. Spirit energy and elemental attacks, too, do not affect Immortals any different than they do regular warriors. What sets them apart is their power against their opposing alignment: if a celestial attack were to meet a demonic attack in mid-air, they would completely negate one another out, but if the same celestial attack were to actually connect with a demonic individual, the energy would deal double the damage, and the same goes for demonic energy.
But what about half-breeds?
Half demons or angels use a form of spirit energy that is aligned with their specific affinity, but replenishes over time like normal spirit energy. Despite this advantage, it lacks the potency that full celestial or demonic energy would have, being mostly mortal spirit energy, and a little less than half supernatural energy; moreover, they also have the same weaknesses against the opposing alignment, if a full demon were to land an attack against a half-angel, it would be more effective than normal, but not as much if he were full-angel.
Looking now at the various kinds of energy and their uses, several different classes of use crop up that a warrior will usually fall under. Elementalist, Spiritual Warrior, Acolyte, Mage, and Immortal are all categories that one tends to fall into. An Elementalist prefers to specialize in elemental magic, one or two elements that are very powerful, and that they are very adept at manipulating; on the downside, the two elements cannot conflict (Fire = Water, Earth = Wind, Metal = Wood, Sun = Moon), and they lack pure spirit energy attacks. Spiritual Warriors use the pure spirit energy to perform their various attacks and defensive techniques, and though they are unbeatable in terms of skill and spiritual strength, they lack any form of elemental affinity. Acolytes are a sort of middle ground between the two previous classes. They are capable of using both elemental and spiritual attacks, but they lack the skill and power that would come if they would specialize in one or the other.
The Mage class is a little different from the rest: the Mage (Warlock, Sorcerer, Wizard, or whatever term one wishes to use, Mage is just the generic term) is like the Acolyte insofar as they are able to use both elemental and spiritual attacks, but can do so with the power and skill to match the Elementalist and Spiritual Warrior. Though the Mage sounds like the best of all the classes, to compliment its obvious pros, it has some very steep costs. For one, they lack the fluidity of transition from one form of attack to the other that Acolytes possess, as well as the freedom of manipulation that Elementalists and Spiritual Warriors enjoy; in other words, they cast “spells” that have set uses and effects that are very difficult to change. As if this weren’t enough, the first three classes of warrior all use up their limited amount of spirit energy at about the same rate, but the Mage uses his energy twice as fast. The Mage must be an expert in their class with a few key spells that will be almost 100% effective, so as not to waste valuable spirit energy.
Immortal too is a class all its own, with its own advantages and disadvantages. As mentioned before, Immortals and half-breeds can have two different forms of energy: celestial, and demonic. It seems though that the Immortal class has nothing but problems that would inhibit anyone from effectively combating as this class, but the crux of the matter lies in their name: Immortal. With their special energy flowing through their body like a vessel, they are inextricably linked to their respective afterlife and are incapable of dying in the normal sense. They can take damage, and their mortal, fleshy host body may die, but their spirit is automatically returned to Heaven or Hell, and after replenishing their respective energy, can simply phase back onto the mortal plane of existence. In order to truly die (ex. The 3 deaths, forever gone rule) they must either be so completely obliterated by an almost impossibly powerful attack on the mortal plane their spirit simply could not return to their afterlife, or they must be killed in their afterlife.
Now, one may wonder, “What if I don’t want to use this system? What if I want to do my own thing and just have an awesome kickass character that no one has ever seen before or would ever expect?”
Our simple answer is, “We’d love that.”
There are very few characters, if any, that are currently on the site that comfortably fit any of the molds set down by this system, and that isn’t at all a problem. For example: Jimmy Claymore, Falkan Reval, and Kihaku Sagaku. Jimmy Claymore has what he deems an “inner demon,” which, in most technical aspects, is a full-demon once transformed; however, his inner demon simply isn’t a demon at all, but is more a split personality that Jimmy fights against nearly all the time. Falkan too would almost perfectly fit the Mage class, using powerful and effective Ice, Earth, and unique energy attacks, except that he has such huge amounts of raw spiritual energy that he can fight for far longer than a Mage normally would, and he allows for a few weaknesses in his own attacks. Kihaku should, in all respects, be a Spiritual Warrior, his only forms of offense consisting of energy attacks and sword-play. What sets him apart is that he is of a race of beings that use a form of energy called “Chaos Energy,” something never before seen on the board until his introduction.
Do not despair if our system isn’t to your liking, you’re far more likely to come up with some unique, rebellious idea that the entire community will love and clamber for spots to RP against, but if not, then we have this comfortable baseline for you to being writing your character up.
